NPPL(A)
The National Private Pilot Licence
A UK private licence with tighter privileges, a shorter course, and a lighter medical.
Like the PPL, an NPPL(A) is for private flying only, not for pay. The limits are specific.
- Pilot in command of a single-engine piston aeroplane (land), or a touring motor glider, with a maximum take-off mass of 2,000 kg
- No more than three passengers, and never more than four people on board
- UK-registered aircraft, in UK airspace. Flights abroad are not permitted
The course
- 32 hours of flight training
- 22 hours dual, including 1 hour of instrument appreciation
- 10 hours supervised solo
- 4 hours solo cross-country
- A solo cross-country of at least 80 nautical miles, landing away, then returning
Six multiple-choice exams: Air Law, Human Performance, Meteorology, Navigation, Aircraft General, and Communications. You also need a Flight Radio Telephony Operator’s Licence.
Medical
A Pilot Medical Declaration is enough. You do not need the Class 2 required for the PPL.
